Before & After: cupboard makeover

Good morning folks!

Everyone loves a before and after, right? Heck yes. Even when it involves cupboards, mini-makeovers are ridiculously cool. My sweet friend Katie (whom you’ve met many times before) spiffed up her kitchen shelves and was kind enough to share her little project with us!

Here’s more info about the little makeover, in Katie’s own words…

The “before” picture wouldn’t tell you this about me, but I’m really a clean, tidy type of person. For example, my closet is organized by the type of garment – pants, skirts, tanks, tees, long sleeves, sweaters, etc. because in Oregon, you dress in layers. I love to organize and keep things organized…once I have a system in place to do so!

We store all our dry foods (cereal, rice, crackers, granola bars, nuts, etc.) in this one cupboard. And as you can see, it’s gotten a little (a lot) out of control. We tend to make a once-a-month Costco trip, which only makes organizing food (and keeping it fresh) a challenge when it comes in huge quantities and packaging. For our wedding, we registered for a few of the OXO® containers that you can find at Crate & Barrel, Macy’s and probably a number of other stores. They are easy to handle, come in lots of great stackable sizes and shapes and have an airtight seal. I took a long look at the types of food that are a staple items in this cupboard (mainly cereal, snacks, and baking ingredients) and picked out a container to match that need.

We received a few containers as gifts and then spent about $165 more on additional ones. I know, it’s a lot of money for a kitchen cupboard (hello, I could’ve bought a new pair of jeans or tickets to a play for that kind of money) but for us, it’s been a worthwhile investment. When we’re scurrying around in the morning before work, cereal and coffee is easy to access and keep tidy. And when it’s time to make a meal, we can look at the cupboard to scan all our options. If you’re on a tight budget, you can look for alternative storage containers at a cheaper price.

So lovely! It’s really the little things in life that make us feel put together and organized, and this mini cupboard makeover reminded me of just that.

Thanks again for sharing Katie and happy Monday!
