Morning! Today’s House Guest is from the East Coast and I love her classic style! Kelly from Bungalow Blue and I have had a virtual friendship for some time, and I admire her clean and traditional style. In short, she gets white right. Awhile ago, she told me she was adding a built-in bookshelf to her family room, and you know me, I’m a sucker for a good built-in. Lucky for us, she’s sharing a few before/after photos with us today.
Hello! I’m Kelly from Bungalow Blue Interiors! Restored Style was one of the very first blogs I started following, and Kirsten is a super sweet blogging friend, so I’m thrilled to be guest posting for her while she’s away in New York! Today, I’m going to share one of my favorite improvements to our home – a corner built-in unit in our living room!
We built our home in 2010 and had planned to put our TV in this out-of-the-way corner of our living room. When we couldn’t find a corner unit big enough for the space, we decided to build a custom unit, instead. Up until then, this is how we ended up watching TV for the first year-looking back now at all those exposed wires makes me cringe – yikes! So not pretty:
You can’t really tell in this picture, but one wall is 60 inches, while the joining wall is 72, making planning for an evenly spaced custom unit difficult. We also had to take into consideration the vaulted wall to the right:
We ended up going with a 40-inch middle section, flanked by a set of 19-inch wide shelves on either side. We added Shaker-style doors below to match our kitchen cabinetry and backed the shelves with beadboard run horizontally for an unexpected touch. Chunky molding tops it off. The extra storage is wonderful, but best of all I love how it has completely opened the space:
The built-ins are painted Sherwin Williams Extra White to match the kitchen cabinets and trim throughout our home. We get a lot of light in this part of our house and the white looks so clean and crisp:
I change around the shelves all the time – I chalk it up to my OCD, but it drives my husband crazy!
Thanks for reading and have a great week!
Thanks Kelly for the wonderful before/after post:).
