Living Room/Dining Room Before + After
Morning, folks.
I thought of something this weekend. Have I ever showed you before/after photos of the living and dining room areas? I didn’t think so – shame on me.
The photos we snapped before we moved in are not the best pictures, but they do give you a good idea of what the space looked like before we started painting and buying furniture for our new place.
Here we go…the “before” living room photo…
And the “after” photos, which you’ve seen a million times…
And now the “before” dining room photo (which clearly wasn’t being used as a dining room)…
The dining room “after” photos…
As you can see, the home had good bones and character when we bought it. The house just needed some love and care and it was missing that “put together”cohesive feeling that all cozy homes have.
Years later, our little abode is finally coming together!

OMG!! I Die over your table!! where did you FIND it!!!! LOVE!!
Thanks so much:)! We actually had the table specially made in my husband’s home town of Sweet Home, Oregon. Wish I had better source info for you.
This room is absolutely gorgeous! Wow, what a transformation! I love love love the green in the living room. Would you perhaps be willing to share the color # and brand? It would be perfect in my kitchen!
Sure! It’s Benjamin Moore’s Copley gray. We love it too:)!
Hi! i love your yellow floral dining room curtains – can you tell me where you found the fabric and what brand it is??
Hi heather! I bought it online from Premier Prints. They have the pattern in other colors too:). Hope that helps!
These before and after pics are incredible! I love your style!
Can you tell me what kind of branches are in that demijohn in the last pic? They’re perfect!
Hi Linda! To tell you the truth, I am not sure. I bought them months ago and they dried perfectly. Sorry I am not much help – I will pay attention next time I purchase some:).
It’s unbelievable how much I love your home. I would do ANYTHING to have you come to mine and help me figure out a layout for our living room and dining area. It’s one big open floor plan and while I’m “okay” with it as is, I’d love to have it look like a completed area like yours. #1 favorite home ever

THANK YOU for the nice words! I do offer design services, so if you are interested, we could work together sometime:).
Where did you get that living room coffee table? Oh oh oh it’s nice!
Hi Brittany! Thanks! We picked up that coffee table at Crate & Barrel and I am happy to report they still carry it!
love love love obviously. I love how your family room doesnt have a TV
I was just trying to show my husband the other night pictures of your home and had hard time finding them so this was perfect!
Did u make your dining table? It’s beautiful!! So is your home
Hi Angie! We did! We had it made from old barn boards from my husband’s hometown of Sweet Home, Oregon. We love it:).
For your fireplace insert did you get a new one or did you paint it? We have an old gold insert and are not sure if we want to buy a new one (they are pricey).
Hi Lina! Good question! I actually painted it, after cleaning it and scrubbing it for hours:). I used high-heat spray paint meant for bbq’s and such and it’s been great. I still looks brand new and we’ve had many, many fires in our fireplace. I would totally recommend just giving your insert a good scrub and a few coats of black matte high-heat spray paint. Good luck!
What a beautiful transformation. Great job!
Love your home! Where did you get the mirror over the mantle?
Thank you Maya! I actually stumbled across the mirror on Craigslist years ago. It’s one of my most favorite fines of all time:).
Your house is truly one beautiful cozy home where much love and creativity went into!! There are so many questions already about it so I hope you do not mind answering one more – where did you get the white side table next to your front door? I am looking for something just like that in black or natural wood. Thank you for the inspiration!
xoxo
Hi Sonya! Thanks for the sweet comments. I picked up that little table on Craigslist. It was wood when I bought it and I decided to paint it white. It’s actually an old sewing table and I’ve seen a few of them at garage sales and such. I am sure you’ll find something like it if you keep your eyes peeled:).
I really love the mirror above the fireplace.
Love your home! You have done an amazing job! My husband and I just bought a cape cod and I can’t wait to start decorating. I live in Richmond, VA and follow Young House Love, that’s ow I found you! Anyways, love the colors of pillows you used in your living room. Where did you find them?
Thanks Taylor! So glad you found my little blog:). The orange pillows are from Manor Fine Wares in Portland (they have an online store too) and the rest of the pillows are ones I’ve picked up over the years from Crate & Barrel and West Elm. Hope that helps!
Beautiful, Kirsten! I never get tired of seeing pictures of your home!
Beautiful! What color is the dining room?
Thank you! It’s Olympic Paint’s Quill color:).
I am thinking of the Eldridge pendant for my dining room. Do you feel like it gives off enough light in your space? This would be my main source of light in the room. My room is 11×13 and I am trying to decide between medium and large and was wondering how big your room is since you have the medium. Thanks!
Hi Jess! I’d reccomend the medium one, as the large one is super big(we have the medium). As for the amount of light, it doesn’t give off much. It’s a light that is super pretty, but it’s not overly functional. Hope that helps!
Seriously stunning!

Beautiful home! Can I ask where you found the map above the couch? And was it framed or did you have that done? Thanks!!
Thank you! We bought it framed at Schoolhouse Electric:)!
Hi Kirsten,
Your house is absolutely beautiful!
I have been in love with the topographic map from Schoolhouse Electric for a while now and am just wondering – where did you get the frame for it? I am renting so I cannot paint the walls (SO frustrating!) and have been trying to figure out something to put on my huge WHITE wall.
Hi Amanda! We bought the Schoolhouse Electric frame with the map – they had a few already framed in the store and we snatched it up! Have you ever thought about doing decals on your white walls? There are some super nifty ones out there – they are far from cheesy and might help with your white wall problem:).
i love the small black coat hooks with cubbies attached to them, where did you find that?
Hi Patricia! We had them made my a local woodworker, who modeled them after Pottery Barn’s piece:).
The light fixture in the before picture looked like it was really nice. Did you replace it because it was in bad shape? I hope you kept it…
Hi Sharon! We still have it…it’s resting nicely in our basement:).
I LOVE everything about your home!!! I keep going back to your blog for inspiration. Could you tell me where you bought your dining room curtains? Or did you make them yourself? Beautiful!
I see your answer on a previous response. Thanks : )
I love your home! I was reading one of your older dining room panel posts and you mentioned that you stayed over here in Sisters and that is were we live! I can’t wait to visit Portland (for the first time) and find some great treasures to add to my small collection!
Hi Sara! Yes, we absolutely adore Sisters! So fun that you get to live there:).
I adore your living room, but also, the lighting is beautiful in these pictures. Do you have any techniques? (Tripod, long exposure, lights on/off)?? Thanks!
Awww, thanks Lisa! I am a beginner at taking photos, so it’s really just trial and error! Wish I had better tips to share:)!
I love what you did with your rooms! And I LOVE your sofa, where is it from!? Thanks in advance
Awww, thanks Amy! It’s from West Elm – happy shopping!
Where did you find the white slipcovered arm chairs in the dining room? Love these! Thanks
At Ikea:)! And for cheap!
Hi Kirsten,
What a beautiful home you’ve made! I peeked at the other comments before asking this, but didn’t find an answer… Where did you purchase your living room curtains? Thanks!
Hi Kate! Thanks for the note – they are from Target:)!
Hello Kirsten! I absolutely love your decorating style. Indeed, you have made a beautiful home. I really like the 4 framed pictures in your dining room. Where did you purchase them? Thank you!
I actually bought the photo files on etsy and had them blown up at Kinko’s. They were super cheap! Sadly, the esty seller isn’t in business anymore, but I am fairly sure you might be able to find other sellers who sell digital files of artwork:).
Hi Kristen! I love love LOVE your aesthetic and the way you put together your living/dining rooms. So beautifully cohesive, especially in your palate choice! From following your blog I know you are now in your new house, but I have a quick question about the (slipper style) armless chair pictured in your living room (the blue and cream/white ikat pattern)…do you recall where it is from?? If you could let me know that would be great!! Looking forward to your kitchen reveal
Thanks!
Thank you, Michelle! That chair is from Urban Outfitters, and I believe they still have it:)! Happy shopping!
Thanks Kirsten!
