{Progress} Exterior Paint + Landscaping

Morning!

If you’ve been reading this little blog for awhile, you might remember that Kyle and I painted our last house. We swore we would never do it again. That’s why when it came time to paint our new house, we hired my brother. He’s a teacher and has the summer off (lucky duck) and he hammered out our house in a week. And he did a really, really great job. We love the color we chose (Benjamin Moore’s snowfall white/Benjamin Moore’s racoon fur for the trim) and are happy with the exterior transformation thus far.

Again, just to remind you, this is where the house started…

And then we wiped out the landscaping, and we were left with this…

And here’s where we are today…besides the paint, we¬†also did our share of landscaping. And when I say we, I really mean Kyle. He has a thing for plants and works his tail off in the yard. I’m crazy impressed by all that he’s been able to accomplish this summer…green plants do wonders for a white house!

We aren’t finished yet (tear!), but I thought it was due time to show you where we are at. We still have new light fixtures to install (do you like the one hanging off the wall on the brick? Ha!), pots that need plants, and a number of other crucial curb appeal items to check off our list. I’m saving the panoramic pics for the official “after” shots. Stay-tuned!

Looks great!! Are you planning on bulking up the column on the porch? I think that would make a really nice difference. Can’t wait to see the light fixture you chose for the porch!

I love everything you do, but I’m just curious as to why you painted the exterior? It already seemed to have a nice color pallette outside. And kudos to Kyle. I hate landscaping! So I hire my mom :)

Hi Mara! We felt the exterior needed a fresh coat of paint. It was reading a little “blah” for lack of a better term:). We also thought we should paint before we did any major landscaping, so it just felt like a good time to do so. I did like the old color pallette, but I think I like the new white too!

How hard was it to get rid of those shrubs? We badly want to do that! Is now a good time? Someone said to wait until next spring and it would be easier????

It was really, really hard. It took Kyle and his Dad an entire weekend (full of 8+ hour days) this last Spring to demolish the yard and then another full day a few months later to get rid of the stumps. And then time to prep the soil, select plants, order mulch..you know the drill! It’s quite the process so if you can wait until Spring, it might be a good idea. We also had huge bushes AND a large yard, so maybe your landscaping project is on a smaller scale that ours:).

You two have clearly been working hard and the house looks fantastic. Good call on pulling out all the old shrubbery, it was hiding your beautiful house! Can’t wait to see how it looks once everything fills it–the green is going to pop against the white house!

Love the change. So much brighter and fresher. Good point about the column, M. I would have never thought of that. It will be fun to see what you do with that, Kirsten. I like the square stepping stones too. Nice detail. Looking good!

Absolutely beautiful! What a difference!!! Thank you for sharing Kirsten! What did you and Kyle do to prep under the mulch to help prevent weeds? We’re landscaping right now… and it’s tough!!

Obviously I love the new paint! I’m so jealous that you have a two car garage, sometimes I wish we would have held out for that but where we live it would mean going waaaay over budget. I saw a mention of beafing up the post in front! Can’t wait to see that!

It’s so amazing what some paint can do. The white with black window shutters is stunning. Love the work. Especially the yard work around the house.
