Death by Dresser

It’s true. My dresser killed me this weekend.

The dresser I’ve been chronicling (see past posts here, here, and here) for the last few months nearly brought me to tears. I spent 6+ hours scraping paint this weekend. I even have blisters. Ugh! With that said, I *think* I’m moving in the right direction. Be jealous you didn’t spend your weekend scraping/sanding paint…

After day one of scraping, the concrete was littered with pieces of paint.

Day two of scraping rolled around, and by the late afternoon, both Kyle and our neighbor Michael felt sorry for me and came to the party. Thank goodness for more hands!

Right now the dresser is resting inside, and I’m gearing up for round two next weekend. I believe we’ve uncovered some lovely tiger wood, and I like what I see. Believe me, I wouldn’t spend this much time on a piece that we’ll only have for a few years. I think this is a classic piece we’ll have for a long time, so I’m willing to put in some elbow grease for a pretty item we’ll have forever.

I still have a bit more sanding to do, and then it will be time for some shellac and polyurethane action.

And at last, this never-ending project will be complete. Believe me, I’m not holding my breathe:).

Dresser Before & After…& After?

Cheers to Friday, friends!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned my little dresser project lately (see past updates here and here).

Last I updated you, I was on my fifth coat of white paint, and I was still waiting on three anthropologie knobs ordered from a New Jersey store. Well, the knobs arrived. The last coat of paint dried. And I *thought* it was going to be smooth sailing from here on out.

Well, when I tried to put the drawers back in to the dresser, the project went south (see how they don’t quite fit in the photo above?). The piece is old, but once  I took out the drawers to paint, I realized how rickety it was. Nothing fit and the drawers were wonky. I got frustrated. I literally had to use all of my might to get the drawers to open and close, and I ended up scratching the piece in a few spots. Instead of stepping away from the project, I decided the dresser would look good antiqued. So I went for it. Keep in mind this is usually my specialty. I’ve painted A LOT of furniture and usually everything goes fairly smoothly. That was not the case this time. I antiqued my little heart out, got carried away, and now I feel like I have a dalmation on my hands. See the photo below for proof of my mistakes.

It’s now too antiqued. I hate it. I don’t want to paint it again. What’s a girl to do? Suggestions?!? Eeeeek!

A dresser in the making

Remember when I blogged about my hand-me-down dresser? I haven’t forgotten about it, promise.

As it turns out, I was apparently on a white paint terror this weekend. All furniture in our house should’ve made a run for it, because I was having a ball with my paint brush. Besides our staircase, what was I painting? This beautiful dresser I’d recently inherited from my Momma’s sweet friend…

I painted it. And I had all these plans to go crazy with a paint color or even a design, but when it came down to it, I just decided I like white furniture. A lot. It matches everything, and in a small and old house like we have, it makes rooms look a little bit bigger and fresh. AND, for all you wood furniture fans out there, don’t be mad at me! The dresser had this funky paint and stain on it, so I promise I didn’t paint over pretty wood. I painted over dingy paint, which is something the photos don’t show.

Here’s a quick shot of the dresser with a few coats of white paint in our guest room…

As it turns out, the dresser actually needed five coats of paint. Yes, five. Yikes. It’s safe to say I did A LOT of painting this weekend. Now, it just needs needs knobs and it will be done!

So, about the knobs….I actually have them, but I only have three of them right now, and the dresser needs six. I found the knobs at Anthropologie on sale for $2.95 each. Score. They are called the ripe melon pull and I love the ceramic gourd and the fluted brass. Classy, eh?

The store only had three of the green knobs (they still have white in stock online if you want to grab a few of your own), so the other three are currently in the mail and being sent to me from New Jersey. As soon as I have them in my hands and place them on the dresser, this little baby will be in business. Here’s a sneak peek picture of the dresser today…

I am hoping to have my puurty green knobs by the end of this week, which means this tired dresser will be all dressed up and ready for its grand reveal next week.

Stay-tuned!
